Some people may remember I remade this BG1 map for a certain competition earlier this year.

Well last night I decided to open up hammer and have another bash at it but I couldn't be bothered. I then get a message from Blue Wizard asking me what I am working on, so I tell him and send him the bsp. Then he says he will work on it and I send him the VMF.

I couldn't find out who the original author was, if anyone can remember please tell me so I can acknowledge them properly.
UPDATE: Credit to Predator for the original BG1 map.

Screens:

New in r5:
Deeper Trench and explosions happen after every centre cap

I had fixed the explosions a while back but didn't really think just that deserved a release. Then months passed and I thought I may aswell put this out. I won't be working on this anymore. If someone else wants to please go ahead.

The BG1 map janus was probably Predator's work. Steve will know who exactly. It's likely that steve also has some part in this, he basicly compiled most BG1 maps for 1.0F AFAIK.

Pr3d's map, afair.

I loved it, and it was played to death and beyond during testing and after the 1.0f release.

Should be interesting to see how this plays out in bg2 2.0 - does this still have the cannon fire to clear the hilltop trench campers after a team captures the middle?

DLing now, I'll check it out later.

No, there isn't any cannon fire triggered in this at the moment, but after playing it the other night on the AP server it would be good to add for the next version.

I'm afraid it most likely won't live up to the standard of the original by Pr3dator.

Actually, dispense with the walled-off sides altogether and just leave them virtually open, with just a low hedge to indicate the border, as in the original map. Janus is just a piece of arbitrarily designed decent gameplay floating in space anyways, so it doesn't need to look or feel particularly realistic or plausible.

That was exactly the same on bg1 janus. Not to be rude but don't overglorify the past. It was as simple, the map only seemed to be wider.
It's just a simple vertical hedge on it a little taller than the player and just as much 2D and papercut look. For those who forgot

Side the map with a smaller hedge (perhaps mix it in with some sharp inclines also) and use a skyportal to add in some out-of-bounds terrain. Unnecessary as the map is essentially a gameplay piece, but all you can do is add polish after you get the basic shape of the original finished.

Pred was the author of the original map, I think Sgt. Pepper named it... I replaced some dynamic lights in it with static ones at some point.
As much as I enjoyed his terrain-only maps I would have loved for Predator to have created another forestroad, that and ruin were the two maps that hooked me into BG.

... Anyways I'm running this map on the AP server since it pretty much covers the basis for what jackx refers to as a crap pub map.
*Open target long range shooting
*Easy to find flags
*Stuff to hide behind while reloading
*Not too far from spawn so melee rushes are still somewhat effective.
*Can handle 3v3 to 8v8

The map I really liked was bg_saratoga for the outstanding design and lexington. So much love put into saratoga with the floating leaves and the autumn design. I wish I could work with the bg 1.0f particle system in bg2 myself - it was way beyond that what valve is doing, and so easily adjustable by player preferences. Undergrowth by Bugi also made good use of it. BG field was pretty nice too, would be a better candidate for a really good remake together with lexington.

Lexington was ok, despite basically being bg_ruin, with the added option of not just running forever, but not even encountering an enemy while doing so.
Forestroad had the best combination of atmosphere and gameplay, IMHO, but would be hard to remake. Tree walls just don't cut it anymore, and with the increased firepower and the narrow paths, gameplay would just stall.
As far as Saratoga is concerned, I liked the bg2 version a lot more (and it should still play well in 2.0, might be worth giving that a try).

QC: With the addition of the "campers get cannonspammed when you cap the middle" part, it was, and will probably be again, a really good pub map, because it combines capturing flags with the motivation most likely to get a pub player going - fire ze cannons!

Err, no, I must've missed that.
And seriously, tying cannon fire to flag capture is the best way to implement it, IMHO.

true, the map seems to be dark / mostly in shadow. Maybe you should change the pitch and the skybox to get it right (Jake' skybox there only has a place for the env_sun at low pitch, but well you can just have the light come from higher pitch anyway).

Hmm Who wrote the first one, DEV member That would be ANGRY IRS AGENT dont u know. I think all bg1 maps should be imported and thats kinda what Semorph and myself had in mind. Nightinvade, field, valley, bunkerhill, fort, castle_x and battlefield to name a few I had someone fix up for me and import I might add. Janus is ok but I think Lexington, Forestroad, convoy, exhaustion would be great. My favorite was Crush love those cannons.

Almost forgot Grantels snowbattle map always populated servers and since bg2 is small theses days it would be nice to see that.

Snowbattle I think was made by Yeehaa/Woohoo, a dutch colleague of mine who played in Bon$e in bg1. But well it's really been a loong time. I myself think bg1 maps would need to be changed in a few aspects but some would really make good maps then-
