I found out about this game a few weeks ago when my roommate (dilly) introduced it to me one evening. He taught me how to crouch before firing or stabbing and to make sure my musket is loaded at all times so I can blow away the enemy troops. Anyways, I've been hooked since. It's pretty cool since I didn't play games before finding battlegrounds 2. You can usually find me on a line battle server, hamming it up with my fellow BG players.

So how did you guys discover this game?

Pic is dilly (in glasses) and me at a museum.

Quite so - seems to be doing litt harm so far, though. Maybe he's one of those wannabe trolls who are really all soft and cuddly.

To answer the question - I found out about bg back in the spring of 2003 through the firearms forums, when Sgt Pepper mentioned it in a discussion there.

I actually found out about it from an article in the PC Gamer magazine back in 2003. Fit the concept of a game I always wanted to play, so I jumped right on. The rest, as they say, is history :P

College summer of 02. My roomie has an Alienware PC and got me hooked to CS. Then one night out of boredom we dloaded the mod. Played it a few days and didnt come back to it untill I met Taxpayer. I walked into the cave. Yellow stained walls. Warm 18 pack of Budweiser. A window ledge stacked high with empty beers. The little monitor was beautiful. It was loading a game. I inquired what game. Got a sick chubby going when I saw castle being played. 3 days later my roomie and I went and got a hl2 disk. And bam. The evil overlord was born and started his campaign to find 150 goons.

I was sitting in irc and then my wacko friend downloaded BG1 and said "Dude you have to check out how retarded this mod is!"

We then switched between 1.6 and bg1 off and on and I got into it.

Either it was a Netscape or an MSN search back in early 2001. I was continually looking for historical HL1 mods (I'd been playing HL1 death match since 1999 or so, CS Betas since 2000. I'd drop a search in the box every so often. BG1 appeared in a search one day. It was a basic black website with a simple forum. The game had not been released in any form yet but was in development by Ben and NegIon. I joined the boards and offered to help with the game in any way possible.

We waited around until Sept. 2001, when the first beta came out.

Found some bumper cars mod with a bunch of player models from other HL mods, the idea of a Revolutionary war game sounded ridiculous so I had to try it.

Nathan Hale wins (unless Black Panther or Ben shows up?) :)

2002 or something like that. In May 2005 I though a HL2 port would be in order, and here we are..

edit: Aw, it seems the fifth anniversary (10th of May 2005) of the first public release already passed

It was on a disk that came with PC Format magazine. It had the best hl2 mods on it. I still have the disk and article, because this game is that important to me.

Well.... smile.gif

I had been given a student license of Visual Studio for my birthday in 2001 and I was looking for a project to work on to really start working on my programming skills. I had heard Half-Life mods were always looking for more programmers, so after looking around PHL I found an advert by some American Revolution War mod that had started up the previous summer. This should be a nice simple project for a year or so.... biggrin.gif

NegIon once mentioned to me he was inspired by the Patriot movie. Those flying axes were a menace in the early versions. A couple players got really good with them and could own hard.

Back in 2002 Me and my son were rolling through mods and wow The Battlegrounds was there and The Patriot was the movie of the year for us. I fired up a a PIII pc got a sever up on WON Servers and 3D was born. My kid recruited some kids in the hood and the net, Nitro, Nitroduck, theboynextdoor, the Hunter, Spears, Rauko, Smoke,LT Morrow, Rustynail (Eugene Belford), Turkeyhunter, and Patriot began 3D and yea I left out alot but hey there was only 6 servers and most were 8 to 16 player servers. Sheetz and Slash had there own clans and about 6 months later Tie and the 13th came along and scrims began. The BGL was born and wow the maps were just rolling through, Oh and I have all releases. Some awsome and cool clans were Digga, KMA, //GAR// KRR, FUC,WNX,23rd,SOL. The times then were great, the times now are not so great because of the new mods and BG2 not as popular as the old days. WORD!!!!!

I will tell you what I think, this is horrible. Like all the other remakes of BG1 maps. There is a reason why we do not do that in any form. Do not bother to remake old bg1 maps. BG1 was a totally different game as draco pointed out and the maps are not going to work out on BG2.

in march 2008 I was searching for some HL2 mods, and found this. After playing for a few hours I got hooked and started playing a lot on the TRR server and joined them 1-2 weeks later

I played nearly every HL1 mod that existed. I liked BG after a first WTF moments (shoot, reload in front of enemy and get stabbed). Stuck around because I liked melee fighting and having kill streaks against other players

I remember those "throw them up" WON servers-- the first Sons of Liberty server was an old IBM ThinkPad laptop lodged in a docking station (the old aircraft carrier type). It would get up to 8 people and begin to lag. But the game's performance hit at that time was so light that you could host on those older machines fairly well. I often wished at that time that I had a decent desktop to host BG1.
