Not a radar screen to locate players or location indicator, a la Oblivion and Fallout3 (although a flag indicator would be cool). Just a compass. Every map already has a graph-like layout. Y axis is North/South X axis is West/East. Simple.

What would the purpose of this compass be? Can you give some scenarios where it would be useful?

Honestly the only reason I want a compass in for large maps like linebattles. Instead of using landmarks for coordinating two ranks it would be nice to use compass directions (lb_farmslands has like 5 wheatfields, so "I'm near the wheatfield" doesn't do shit). I can see it being useful beyond linebattles, though.

Are you Russian?

Anyway,
Question: who no were the red coat is? Answer: It not a radar. it a compas.
Statement: come to the batul and no of the kaos of it. Reply: Battle is koas but still has kaos with compas. Death is still pain and suffer with compas.
Question: why not make loyulust insted? Answer: Loyulust is good eyedia. Compas is quick eyedia fix to game. Loyulust is longer bild to develop time.

Anyway, once again I'm not asking for a radar. That would defeat the point of the game.

It's not a bad idea per se. I'm not sure if we would be able to whip something up with such rapidity to include it in the push to release it. Could I recommend re-suggesting it after 2.1 is done?

With the 2.1 update linebattle clans are looking forward to using Concord with cannons, Alpine pass and Valcour Island with the public (as they are a separate download with 2.0). Only one of those maps (Concord) has defining landmarks while the other two are mostly landmass and little more.

I can't predict how a navigation feature would function with the game to date but it seems to me like a worthwhile, if not lofty, pursuit.

EDIT: If you come up with something and need artwork just PM me and I'll see what I can do.

I know the first Red Orchestra has a HUD compass (and map) in it but I really think that's mostly because you do need it in order to learn the large maps and navigate them, not because it is realistic. A compass that is always in view as HUD element is pretty far from realistic seeing as you cannot really hold a compass in your hand and stare at it all the time as soldier, so it is an odd thing to have the information present all the time.

I can see that it might help in linebattles and perhaps commanding (higher ranked) officers during the war would have been aware of directions and/or possibly using a compass. Perhaps they would be useful accessories to the officer class if we manage to equip the officer with a second kit (carbine + sabre) after 2.1, so that you could have officers that are not useless in LBs and that can exclusively use a compass. You could go even further and think about a telescope for officers but it's pretty far fetched for the normal bg2 skirmish play.

They have pistols. That's what they do. WTF have you been doing with the officer class; sniping?

While it would make sense to give it to the officer class, having this class lead a linebattle is not very constructive, because of the officer's speed itself. Some people would find it tiresome to tap shift after a while just so that the infantry could catch up. And if they overdo it, people are gonna start bumping into each other in the line, which will make them get bumped out and cause a clusterfuck and easy targets for the enemy.

Plus what analord said, can't hit much with that pistol from a considerable distance.
