The BG2 beta is now officially available but not with a simple download it's more a kind of new system.

We use a tool called subversion that automatically checks wheter your local files and folder structure matches the files on the server. It's much like steam that automatically checks if your Counterstrike or DOD is up to date and downloads updates if not.

This means we can update files and spread them to all beta testers - which everyone can be - within minutes which makes it extremly easy to hold beta tests with updated files more regularly.

Here is the easy step by step guide how to get the BG2 Beta working with Windows.
In case you want to run your own linux BG2 Beta server please check Tjoppens forum thread about that topic here.

Step 1:
Download and install the tortoise subversion tool from their website in the download area.

Step 2:
Go to yours steams "SourceMods" directory and create a new folder in there called "bg2-svn"

For me it's in "C:\Steam\SteamApps\SourceMods".

Step 3:
Right click on the folder and from the dropdown menu selection "SVN Checkout..."

Enter "http://svn.bgmod.com/game/bg2" in the URL repository field and the checkout directory should already be filled with the path of your bg2-svn folder. Leave the other settings as they are and click ok.

That's it you are done. Now you can watch the SVN window download the latest files.

Updating your bg2-svn files:
When you want to check if there are any updates right click on your bg2-svn directory and select SVN Update.

Then it will automatically check if you are up to date and download new or changed files. The big advantage here is that only changed data has to be transfered thus keeping the amount to download small.

Okay, so I've done all of this. Everything seems in order, so now my question is this: What am I doing with this? I already have BG2 installed, so what is this exactly? I noticed that in maps Saratoga is listed, so it's definately new stuff. Do I delete the old bg2 folder? If so, is there an icon to run this one because it doesn't appear in Steam.

No, this means you can have the normal release everyone has, and the completely up to date version(as in, you will be playing with things as they are developed instead of waiting for a patch)

Should this bit "path of your bg2-svn folder"

be

"path of your bg2 folder"
As where your files are stored so it can check them otherwise it will download everything again ??

Hmmm maybe not..

No, it must be named bg2-svn so it doesn't interfere with the latest stable release(bg2, 0.15). We'll have to fix it so our server will get the latest updates, recompile and restart itself.. Although I think Slash has already done something to that effect.

Here's my howto - it's pictureless, but it has instructions for Linux:

Have you guys got a change log for whats different so far? I gotta say i loved the theme tune and the hud art is loads better- But with no servers running its hard to test any game balance changes.
Svn worked great was fast and easy to use.

Err, I'll ask my question again: Do I delete my old bg2 folder, and is there an icon that I can run this from?

No, simply create a folder in the same directory called "bg2-svn" and right click on that folder and do the svn checkout.

Just extract anywhere and install it. It should ask you to restart once you are done.

It might be confusing that this is called the BG2 BETA testing system because bg2 0.15 was also entitled beta version.

This stuff with svn is the development version that we do not release officially or want to spread on any more than our development server.

If you want to play BG2 v0.15 you need your "bg2" directory. The bg2-svn directory is something like bg2 v0.15.4 or something and in the end will be released as bg2 v0.16.

If you don't want to really beta test and find bugs then don't bother about this thread at all and don't get svn installed.

To get a detailed changelog via svn right click the "bg2-svn" directory and choose TortoiseSVN->Show Log.

Wonderfully! I've never worked with a better system. We get to describe every chage, revert bad ones, works just as well as it does for source code biggrin.gif

There is not an offical date set. We dont normaly set dates, theres to many variables that can effect when its released.

Theres lots of new stuff, I dont know if theres any stand out "major" new feature.

Off the top of my head there is new maps, new player models re designed hud, new sounds for weapons. The coders might be able to give more info as to the changes under the hood.

improved ballistics (you get a flight curve now instead of a drop) and the removal of the overly exaggerated melee pushback would probably be the two most important gameplay changes...

It shall be good when everybody is running 0.16. Its always frustrating nearing the end of a release. Knowing full well its better than the last version, but theres nobody to play with, everybody is still playing the old one.

Will it be a file to DL like .015 or will everyone have to do the SVN business?
