Hi all,

It seem to be a sea theme today with a couple of posts about watery activities.

So here is my forthcoming Frigate, if you have any comments (constructive) then please feel free. I have to align some textures, more detail work and add the gundeck cannons which unfortunately are all brush based, but they do work and seeing the frigate covered in gunsmoke looks very cool.

Someone was modeling a naval cannon and it looked fantastic...any word on that?

Here are the screenies...

Render is modelling one, but the polycount is very high :/

are you going to make a moving ship? nice work so far

Looks really sweet!

One thing I've tried while messing around with ship models is to make the sails into displacements. If you make them 1 unit thick and use displacements on both sides you can make them look pretty good.

Very nice work so far, looking forward to see it in a map.

All I can say is SWEET DUDE! If I were you I'd make it so the Americans would have to sink the ship and British to keep it afloat.

I have a map where you can sink ships and fire cannons at the other one. :-D

WOW! All these boat maps all of a sudden, lovely work!!
This is by far the most accurate brushbased ship i've seen for BG2 yet.
You have a great eye for details.
The hull textures are a bit usual as alot of custom maps include them which is a bit boring,
it's that red one i'm talking about, but other than that, i think it's superb!

Ah the cannon, i don't know if you meant mine...but it is .. eerr.. a little high poly, like Grantel said, for multiple uses like on a ship, it is ok for 1 cannon per area, but no more, lol. nah
I'm going to reduce it's poly count in a near future but to use it in every gun slot might be a problem, there's like what? 18 slots on your frigate?
say a low poly count like 1,000 .. that's 18.000 poly's!!!
Anyone know if that's way too much, on the verge or accaptable with more to spare?
I'm gonna do my best, but it's hard to make a cannon look convincing and realistic with less than 1.000 poly's, atleast i think so.

I really like it. The cannons look too simple though.

Thanks for all the feedback,

Render, you are absolutely correct! I am also fed up with the same textures, but I am absolute rubbish when it comes to creating custom textures. I was experimenting with the Nelson Check (British colours from around the time of Trafalger) which is the Ochre stripe along the gun deck with black gunports....but it came out looking like a cheap gloss paint from a low cost DIY store LOL. ...so if anyone cares to take a minute and put something together then I will use them on the Frigate with all due credit given. The red texture actually makes it look more like a French vessel as they had the red stripe...

Also, the cannon you are making Render, have you considered toning it down. A simple barrel with the emphasise on the gun carriage?

The idea I had with this is to probably have it as a func train, I have experimented with it as "floatable" and although it does, it is a bit heavy in the water and handles like a bulldozer, control tweaking is low down on my priority list though.

It is also possible to have two ships pounding away at each other if I make some of it breakable, the options are only limited by the imagination... blink.gif

Nubbits, thanks for the Sail/displacement idea ! I must have a play around with it....so off I go, expect an update and more screenies soon.

Hmm, you mean having just the actual cannon (floating in the air) and making it a more simple structure, like just a simple cylinder?

I'm not sure i got your meaning.

I was thinking more of a simple structure for the barrel, then have the gun carriage with more detail.

Just thought of something considering the displacements for the sails. I don't think there is any way to make displacements into entities, so if you make the sails into displacements you might not be able to compile the map if you make the ship into a func_train or floatable. unhappy.gif

I don't know if you can make displacements into any kind of entity at all, if you can the easiest way would be to use the parent system.

One solution for this is to make the sails in the good ol' triangle displacement way like you had to do in hl1. (Deviding a brush into several triangles ant then use the vertex tool to make the displacement).

displacements cant be parented or tied to entities.

It has been a while, but after it was pointed out that the original HL2 textures were getting a bit old already, I put on my hiking boots, shot the cat, locked the front door and went off in search of alternate textures...so here I am in my full explorer regalia, complete with Pith helmet and hobnailed boots...searching hi and low on Google, that most extreme of environments...

I was a little unhappy with how my Frigate was turning out. I looked good but maybe due to the same old textures it didnt look as good as it could...so I started a new ship, a Privateer which eventually will be used with the original when I have "tarted" it up a bit.

Please take a look at the new screenis and let me know the inner workings of your minds.

Tomdon...your cannon would look good here I think.

Regards

Lord

A sea map with some type of Frigate is a personal project of mine, I'ts not related to this guy's work, and no promises about when it would be done (if ever) but maybe one day.
